It was a dark and stormy night, and I think the last time I began an essay with that clichéd opening was in the third grade. Thing is though, it really was a dark and stormy night when this lucky Tesla owner’s Autopilot-enabled Model S saved him from broadsiding an oncoming vehicle at 45mph.

As reported over at Electrek, the driver of the Model S had set his car to just below the speed limit and to follow cars at the maximum distance, approximately two to three car lengths at this speed.

Suddenly, and without warning, an oncoming car turned left in front of the Model S, and due to the driver’s claim that he was concentrating on the cars to his right, he failed to see it and react accordingly. But for the Autopilot system’s intervention, an accident would have been inevitable.

Check out the harrowing video after the break; it’s really quite incredible, and an indisputable endorsement of autonomous driving technology generally.
